One of the prominent suburbs in the Kansas City area, Leawood, Kansas, is located just south of Interstate 435 in Johnson County. It is considered officially a part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area, and had a population of almost 30,000 at the 2000 census. The city takes up an area of just over 15 square miles, all of which is land, and its residents are quite affluent when compared with average Kansans, with a median household annual income estimated at nearly $120,000 in 2007.

Leawood was officially incorporated as a city in 1948 and it is home to one of the oldest school house buildings in the state, Oxford School. The school house was opened in 1877 and operated as a fully functioning school until 1955. Today it can be viewed by visitors interested in learning more about the area’s past. The city is known among the region for having homes with some of the highest values in the area; the average house here appraises for nearly half a million dollars.

Children and teenagers who live in Leawood attend schools in various districts, mostly the Blue Valley and Shawnee Mission districts. High schools in the area are located in nearby towns Stilwell, Overland Park and Prairie Village. There also are eight private schools in Leawood for parents wanting another option. Leawood is home to three golf clubs, Hallbrook Country Club, Ironhorse Golf Club and Leawood South Country Club, and more than 420 acres of parks, including larger ones like Tomahawk Creek Park and Leawood Park. Its City Park sits on more than 65 acres and is the site of a pool with a waterslide, and Ironwoods Park features banquet and nature centers with an area with seating for more than 300.
