Lee's Summit Real Estate Information

A large suburb of the Kansas City Area, Lee's Summit, Missouri, lies splits among Cass and Jackson counties. A development report conducted in 2009 estimated the city's population to be nearly 93,000, enough to make it the sixth-largest city in the Kansas City area as well as the sixth-largest city in the state of Missouri. Lee's Summit makes up an area of almost 62 square miles, with a little more than two square miles being water. Estimates in 2007 put the city's annual median household income at just over $70,000, making it a more affluent than average city.

The town was named in 1865 after an early settler there, Dr. John Graves Lea, who moved to the area in the middle of the 19th century and was killed in 1862 by Native Americans. Though Mr. Lea spelled his name with an A, the town's name was misspelled on a box car, a sign near the railroads and on the printed railroad schedules with an E as Lee, so it has over time become to simply be known as Lee's Summit. The city is a large mecca for health care, with John Knox Village, one of the largest retirement communities in the country, located here.

Children and teenagers who dwell in Lee's Summit are served by three public school districts with operations in the city: Lee's Summit R-VII School District, Blue Springs R-IV School District and Raymore-Peculiar R-II School District. There are two private, religious schools in town: Lee's Summit Community Christian School and Our Lady of Presentation Catholic School. For higher education and degree courses, Lee's Summit is home to Longview Community College on the western side of town. The college is part of the Metropolitan Community College system. Lee's Summit also houses a campus of Baker University.

For enjoying themselves on time off, residents can visit one of the city's more than two dozen parks to enjoy activities like running, playing sports, picnicking and more. The city's downtown area recently underwent a multimillion dollar renovation, and is now stacked with new restaurants, shops, cafes and boutiques. There are small festivals held downtown nearly every weekend in the summer months. Lee's Summit is also surrounded by three large lakes, ensuring residents have easy access to the water and all the activities it affords.
